Silicone sealant does not seem to do well over the long term. Sikaflex sealant is a much better product, ( they have several different ones depending on what you are doing, I like the 252. The end of the board will dry out quicker than a little further down the board. It is caused by a type of fungus that actually eats what holds the wood fibers together.
